Duncan

Electric Basses. From Northumberland, via Hackney. Duncan has, in the past, played pop, rock, blues, soul and folk music, along with traditional, mainstream and modern jazz. These days, he respects traditions but not rigid categories, and likes to do whatever feels best for the tune in hand. In recent years, he has played with the London-based Algerian group Fantazia, with Juldeh Camara and the Afro Manding Troupe, Hassan Erraji's Arabesque and Seddik Zebiri's Seeds of Creation. In the late '90s, he was also part of the house band for Seddik's International Jam Session, at the (now defunct) Samuel Pepys in Hackney: Fantazia and 2002 BBC Radio 3 World Music Award nominees Momo both have their origins in these sessions.

In the early '80s, Duncan played in a number of bands in Newcastle, notably Roxoff, Drifting Robots and Seafood Jive, eventually forming a songwriting partnership with guitarist and composer Steve Hall. Many of their songs, recorded and performed as Resistance, reflected the political and social turmoil of the times (including 'Hanging Onto Anything That Moves', recorded by Zubop as an instrumental on 'freewheeling' - lyrics printed on the liner). The actions of the Conservative government, under Margaret Thatcher, caused devastation in the North East of England. Traditional industries were destroyed and unemployment soared to levels not seen since the 1930s. After Duncan moved to London in 1985, Steve formed a new band, Questionnaires, continuing to perform some of the Resistance songs along with strong new material co-written with singer Jane Wade. Questionnaires have recently resumed operations and released a newly recorded CD 'Arctic Circles' (including new versions of four of the songs co-written with Duncan).
